PUP to rescue over 50 dogs to kick-off 2013!

“Every morning I’m awoken by the gentle nuzzle from my dog, a dog who loves me and appreciates all the little things in life. My dog never understood that just 2 years ago he was scheduled to be euthanized in a California shelter, until PUP stepped in.”

This weekend we are so excited to do our first shelter sweep of 2013 and save over 50 dogs from possible euthanization. By pulling these dogs we are also alleviating the stress in the California shelter by providing some breathing room for their homeless residents…if only for a day or two. Approximately 3 million to 4 million pets are euthanized each year, how can you help save more dogs?

  • Education
  • Volunteer
  • Support your local shelter and rescue
  • Spay/neuter your pet
  • Micro-chip your pets and make sure they have an identification tag on their collar

Below are a few of the lucky dogs being transported to Seattle this weekend from California, they will be adopted by animal lovers in the Pacific Northwest hopefully soon! You can find the below dogs and many more on Petfinder or email adopt@peopleunitedforpets.com.

Adopt Ella the cat, give her a home for the holidays

Ella is a very sweet cat. She was surrendered to the shelter because her owner was downsizing and didn’t have the ability to care for her. Ella is very loving and wants to be near you all the time. She enjoys being petted and loves playing with a few toys. She has taken time getting used to the other big and small dogs in her foster home but after a week, she is finally brave enough to be in their presence. Ella would be a great cat for someone who can give her lots of love and affection. She deserves that special loving family who will open their hearts and home to her in her elder years.

Ella found herself in the Pierce County Humane Society. She was surrendered by her owner. PUP was asked to help and we are so glad we did. Ella is spayed, microchipped, and received a dental. She is current on her vaccinations. She has been flea treated. Ella has a heart murmur http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=2515  and may be in the first stage of kidney failure.

  • Female Domestic Longhair mix
  • Approximately 13 years old
  • Litter box trained
  • Good with other dogs and kitties too!
  • Cat respectful Children over 8
  • Adoption fee: $35

Adopt her!

Spring brings hope for rescued shelter dogs

This weekend we are excited to be doing another shelter sweep! These shelter sweeps bring dogs from high-kill shelters into our rescue organization and provide them with the chance of a new beginning! There will be a Pit Bull mix, Chihuahuas, Terriers and more! Each dog will be fully evaluated by a vet and given all necessary vaccinations before they are adopted. They should all be online soon to adopt!

More Facts and Benefits about Dog Rescue

According to the Humane Society of the US, “the public acquires only 14% of its pets from shelters; 48% get their pets as strays, from friends, from animal rescuers, 38% get their pets from breeders or pet stores.” I found some great benefits and facts about animal rescue from the blog Scratchings & Sniffings that I wanted to share. These really go to the heart of what we do, I invite you to comment below with your thoughts on the benefits of dog rescue:

  • Rescue groups work with shelters and “pull” animals out of the animal shelter environment. Most rescues work with both no-kill and open admission shelters.
  • After the rescue group has taken an animal out of a shelter, they work with a network of “foster” families who care for the animal in their homes until the pet is adopted.
  • Rescue animals in foster care enjoy a more home-like environment, more time to find a new home, veterinary care, and often behavior modification or training.
  • Many rescues are started because of love for a type of animal.

The above are just a few of the many benefits of dog rescue, please feel free to add you comments, we’d love to hear your thoughts!

I talk to him when I’m lonesome like; and I’m sure he understands. When he looks at me so attentively, and gently licks my hands; then he rubs his nose on my tailored clothes, but I never say naught thereat. A Rescue Story…with 6 happy endings!

Penny's puppies

When PUP rescues a dog we’re saving a life, but when we rescue a pregnant dog we’re saving many lives…and teaching the value of spay/neuter programs. Meet Dolly and Penny and their 6 puppies! Both of these moms were surrendered by their owners. These rescued sisters (we believe they’re sisters) were both pregnant and gave birth to their litters 2 weeks apart. We’re celebrating all the puppy’s 1st month birthday this week with a pedicure…ok really we just trimmed all their little toenails. This is a milestone that moms and puppies might not have seen if PUP and Stockton Animal Shelter’s Jenifer McCollum didn’t work together to save the many precious lives that we do.

It’ll be awhile until these puppies are available for adoption, but they will surely find a great forever home! PUP will make sure they’re all vetted, spayed/neutered and full of puppy spunk! The moms will also be available for adoption soon too! And a big thanks to the Stockton CA shelter, Jen and Maureen who walked and cared for these moms and their litters until PUP could get them up to Washington.

Jenifer from Stockton said:

[we] did not know they were pregnant until the first mamma started having her puppies….one of my students came and got me… [and] she had already started to deliver the second puppy…and noticed that the other mamma was also pregnant. She looked like she would have her babies any second. But wait[ed] 2 weeks!

Here are some more photos of these thriving puppies celebrating their 1st month birthday:
