Happy 7 Year Anniversary PUP‏!

Back in 2005, PUP rescued our first dogs out of an Oklahoma puppy mill with the help of Small Paws Rescue out of Oklahoma. We saved 9 dogs that day. Who would have thought, seven years later, we would still be saving lives?

I remember thinking, “I’ll start this and in three years people will be spaying and neutering, all of the dogs will have homes, and I’ll start something else.” Unfortunately, we aren’t to the point where we can close our doors, but in that time some things have changed for the better. I pray they will continue to.

Fortunately, I have the pleasure of working with some amazing volunteers, vets, vendors, and great supporters. Together, we have built a rescue we can be proud to call our own. Thank you!!

With that being said, it gives me great pleasure to present you with our new PUP logo!

To top all of this off, we have saved, as of May 1, 2012, over 1800 dogs, a few kitties and of course a couple of birds!

Thanks to everyone for their support, hard work, passion, and dedication to a rescue that was started with few hands, a very arduous mission, and a big heart!

PUP made the news!!! Susan (in the news clip) made the shelter-sweep trip this time, her first trip all the way to Stockton California. Her and Laura, our founder, did an amazing job of getting pictures and descriptions of the additional dogs to our foster homes so we could all help! Thanks Fox 13 for sharing our story!

Spring brings hope for rescued shelter dogs

This weekend we are excited to be doing another shelter sweep! These shelter sweeps bring dogs from high-kill shelters into our rescue organization and provide them with the chance of a new beginning! There will be a Pit Bull mix, Chihuahuas, Terriers and more! Each dog will be fully evaluated by a vet and given all necessary vaccinations before they are adopted. They should all be online soon to adopt!

More Facts and Benefits about Dog Rescue

According to the Humane Society of the US, “the public acquires only 14% of its pets from shelters; 48% get their pets as strays, from friends, from animal rescuers, 38% get their pets from breeders or pet stores.” I found some great benefits and facts about animal rescue from the blog Scratchings & Sniffings that I wanted to share. These really go to the heart of what we do, I invite you to comment below with your thoughts on the benefits of dog rescue:

Rescue groups work with shelters and “pull” animals out of the animal shelter environment. Most rescues work with both no-kill and open admission shelters.
After the rescue group has taken an animal out of a shelter, they work with a network of “foster” families who care for the animal in their homes until the pet is adopted.
Rescue animals in foster care enjoy a more home-like environment, more time to find a new home, veterinary care, and often behavior modification or training.
Many rescues are started because of love for a type of animal.

Wilby comes to Canada – a rescue dog’s story

We first saw “Wilby”, now named Kiko, on the PUP website Thursday. Feb 02 /2012 and were drawn in by those beautiful brown eyes. We adopted “Gibbs”, now named Rafa from PUP in June/2010 and were thinking of finding him a younger brother. After an exchange of a few emails, we had plans to meet & greet Wilby on Saturday, Feb 4th. Everyone agreed he was a good match for our family and we returned to Vancouver, BC with Rafa and Wilby (Kiko) in the back seat. It was clear he was going to be missed by his foster family. The dogs behaved the entire way home and no questions were asked at the border about them (although we had all the requisite paperwork and shots). On the drive home we decided that Kiko would be Wilby’s new name.

Kiko was a bit shy at first, preferring to stay in his crate but gradually explored his new home. Being an “only child”, there were a few “toy” and “food” issues to resolve but Rafa was adapting very well to the new member of the pack. They have established their boundaries and enjoy drives, walks and doggy parks. We had Kiko’s DNA tested and have learned that his heritage is expectedly a combination of Terriers: Fox(ears/face) /Silky(coat) /Jack Russel (energy, speed and jumping ability). Kiko is still a bit tentative and a bit scared/aggressive around large dogs but we are working on that. He sleeps quietly in his crate at night in our bedroom and Rafa sleeps on the bed. They are alone for no more than 4 hours at a time as someone is home for lunch (and a walk) every day. Kiko seems to have taught Rafa how to indicate it’s “walk” time by pawing at the door or the door stopper to make that ‘twang” sound. We’ve discovered that Kiko especially loves the sand/beach as he really

comes out of his shell there and chases Rafa around. What a great addition to our family he has become… even better than we’d imagined.

Some of our dogs posted online may be available for you to meet. If you’re interested in a specific dog, please fill out an application now for pre-approval and contact us to ensure the dog will be there. An approved APPLICATION will be required prior to taking your new dog home. Please feel free to send an application in today and we will process it as soon as possible. Although you will also have the opportunity to fill out an application at the event, you will need preapproval to complete an adoption.

If you already have an approved application on file with PUP, please email our adoption coordinator Trish, to let her know which dog you are interested in meeting so she can schedule a meeting time.

Spring began this week, but where is the sun? Just because it’s still snowing here and there in Seattle, doesn’t mean PUP isn’t in full Spring-fever adoption mode! Maybe you have been thinking about adopting a dog, or learning more about volunteer opportunities. Either way come join us for our first adoption event of Spring this Saturday 3/24 at Sierra Fish and Pets in Renton. Since 2/11/12, we have placed over 86 dogs into homes–come down and join the cause to save even more! View all our available dogs online!
