Seattle dog lover raises over $3,000 asking friends to make a birthday donation

As birthdays go, our 29th birthday doesn’t grab the attention that a 30th birthday might. You’re still in your 20s (by a thread) and you don’t yet have to check the higher age bracket when asked in questionnaires. Miriam Kelly probably wasn’t thinking about any of this when she came up with an unique birthday request to celebrate her 29th birthday. She asked family, friends and even strangers to donate money in lieu of any gifts to a cause very important to her; dog rescue. Miriam wanted to specifically help People United for Pets. Her goal? To raise $1983 which was, if you are doing the math at home, the year Miriam was born.

To start, she posted her birthday fundraiser on Crowdwise.com. She wrote, “If you know me at all, you know I am passionate about dogs. That is why I would like to donate my birthday to saving dogs’ lives.” And she didn’t stop there. Miriam contacted SeattleDogSpot.com asking for help in getting her story out and reaching her fundraising goal. Issaquah KOMO even covered this generous story. The momentum of Miriam’s good intentions kept going as Jack Sweeny of Rogue Ales and Spirits organized a fundraiser for Miriam that was held at the Issaquah Brewhouse on January 30th.

At that time $1915 of her original $1983 goal had been raised. What began as a small plea to consider donating to dogs what might otherwise have been spent on a coffee habit grew into a huge example of giving at its best. This demonstrates that even the humblest of requests can become the proudest examples of the human spirit and ‘paying it forward.’ Not only did Miriam meet her goal, she surpassed it raising $3209 for PUP. Happy Birthday, Miriam! Your birthday present will help provide many dogs forever homes with families that will create priceless memories with them.

Special thanks to PUP volunteer Chris Gardner for writing this post!

Adopt Cosmo, our Valentines’ Day PUP!

As part of the Valentines’ Day holiday, we’ll be blogging about 1 dog each day until the big day!

Cosmo is a tiny bundle of energy. But, he is a real lap dog for sure! He is a little shy with new people at first, but warms up quickly after a proper introduction and is your best friend. He loves to run and play and jump and give kisses. He plays very nicely with other submissive dogs, but is fearful of more dominant dogs. He enjoys playing with squeaky toys and fetching the ball. He loves to go for walks and does great riding in the car. He is working on crate trained and house trained if kept on a schedule. Cosmo is vocal when he hears other dogs barking or sees other dogs or people out walking. He is learning how to be more quiet and is very good when told ‘no’. He needs training, but also seems very eager to please his people and quick to learn new things. He is very lovable with his people and would do well in an active household. He is a real sweet cuddly boy that wants to be with and please his people, and he will make a wonderful companion!

Cosmo is neutered and microchipped. He is current on his DHPP, Rabies, and bordetella. He tested negative for heartworm and has been wormed and flea treated. Cosmo comes from an overcrowded shelter in California. PUP was asked to help and we are so glad we did. All dogs PUP pulls from California come with health certificates, as required by Washington State.

  • Male Miniature Poodle mix
  • Approximately 1 year old
  • Approximately 6.6 lbs
  • House trained if kept on a schedule
  • Crate trained
  • Will require a home with a fenced yard
  • Okay with other dogs, don’t know about cats
  • Dog respectful children 8 and older
  • Adoption fee: $285

If you think you have room in your home and heart for this dog and you reside within Washington State, please go to our Adoption Information page. There you will find more information and be able to fill out an adoption application. See his Petfinder profile here http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/21760137.

Note: The above description reflects the behavior we have observed in the dog’s foster home. Although PUP provides adopters up to the minute information on our dogs, we cannot guarantee they will behave in the same manner in a different environment with new owners.

Rainey the Yorkie mix needs a sweetheart to adopt her!

As part of the Valentines’ Day holiday, we’ll be blogging about 1 dog each day until the big day!

Rainey came to us as a fearful puppy who had not been socialized. The shelter called her feral. She spent a couple months in foster care in CA before coming up and has been with us for about a month. Rainey is tentative and careful with people, and she will shy away from your hand if you reach for her. If you let Rainey come to you instead, she gets braver and will climb right into your lap. The more we get Rainey to play with us, the more she forgets to be nervous and just acts like a puppy.

She is full of curiosity and is very playful and happy. Her tail is always up and wagging. Rainey does okay with the cats and doesn’t try to hurt them, but will bark at them. Because Rainey is more confident and less scared when with another dog, she would do best in a home with a dog buddy. Her new family will need to be committed to socializing her with a number of people to help her get over her fear. Rainey is potty trained on a regular schedule. She has had no accidents indoors and is happy to run outside with the other dogs. She is also crate trained and quiet in her crate unless she needs something such as to go potty. She is still in the puppy chewing stage so puppy-proofing our home was a must. Putting things up and out of harm’s way and providing lots of chew toys is important. This will keep herself and the items safe. Rainey is not leash trained but is trying to be brave and learn. She is smart and adorable! One look at this girl and she will steal your heart! Raising a puppy requires a lot of work and is a commitment! Rainey will be an awesome addition to a family that can give her the attention, exercise, training and affection she deserves.

Rainey comes from an overcrowded shelter in California. PUP was asked to help and we are so glad we did. All dogs PUP pulls from California come with health certificates, as required by Washington State. Rainey is spayed and microchipped. She is current on her DHPP, Rabies, and bordetella. She and has been wormed and flea treated.

  • Female Blond Yorkie mix
  • Approximately 6.5 months old
  • Approximately 8 lbs.
  • House trained on a potty pad
  • Crate trained
  • Okay with other dogs
  • Looking for a home with a companion dog
  • Not recommended for a home with cats
  • Dog respectful children 8 and older
  • Adoption fee: $275

Thalia the Chihuahua…just might be ‘the one!’

As part of the Valentines’ Day holiday, we’ll be blogging about 1 dog each day until the big day!

Thalia is a SWEETHEART and such an EASY KEEPER! She is a beautiful, happy little dog. She may be a little shy and slow to warm up, but she becomes more interactive as she begins to relax. It did not take long for her to attach to her foster mom, so we are confident she will adjust quickly in her new home as well. When she is not wrestling with her foster brothers & sisters, she can be found tucked into a lap and cuddling with her person. Petting and conversation are very high on her favorites list. When in a stressful situation or in the company of small children (under the age of 10), Thalia chooses to leave the area rather, or hide behind her person, than become acquainted. She learns quickly and enjoys rewards in the form praise and, of course, tasty treats. She does greet visitors and family members with her wagging tail and bright face. Strangers are sometimes met with a bark until she is sure her person knows the stranger. Thalia has good leash skills and enjoys walks on sunny days. She would most likely do best in a quiet but active family with no very small children. This little beauty wants to go home to her forever family and she’ll repay them with her love and loyalty! Thalia is spayed and microchipped.

Thalia comes from an overcrowded shelter in California. PUP was asked to help and we are so glad we did. All dogs PUP pulls from California come with health certificates, as required by Washington State. She is current on her DHPP, Rabies, and bordetella. She tested negative for heartworm and has been wormed and flea treated. She was attacked by a large dog at the shelter and received staples for her bite wounds.

  • Female Chihuahua mix
  • Approximately 4.5 years old
  • Approxmately 8.2 lbs
  • House trained
  • Crate trained
  • Okay with other dogs
  • Dog respectful children 10 and older
  • Adoption fee: $95

Dano the Pomeranian wants to be your cupid!

As part of the Valentines’ Day holiday, we’ll be blogging about 1 dog each day until the big day!

Dano is such a happy furry ball of fluff! Dano greets you in the morning and evening with such enthusiasm. Dano is always up for a walk rain or shine. Heads out with his tail held high waving back and forth. He is friendly at greeting other dogs on the walk and walks well on an extended leash. Dano will walk beside you or head out to explore new smells. He doesn’t pull or tug on the leash.

At home, Dano tends to just want to be with you and loves nothing better then to sit next to you on the couch and receive tummy rubs or just cuddle with you. Dano will jump on you to get attention when he gets excited and also may mouth you. We are working on ‘off’. He is a fast learner and now knows to sit while waiting to be leashed up. Dano has been around all ages of children from 5 to 19. Dano may tend to be cautious when meeting someone new, but then is very accepting. Anyone can win him over with a tummy rub. Dano is not a big barker, except when crated. Outside the crate, Dano is only an alert barker. Dano has been such a joy to our household. Though still young, Dano is a calm fluff ball.

Dano comes from an overcrowded shelter in California. PUP was asked to help and we are so glad we did. All dogs PUP pulls from California come with health certificates, as required by Washington State. Dano is neutered and microchipped. He is current on his DHPP, Rabies, and bordetella. He tested negative for heartworm and has been wormed and flea treated.
