Adopt Cosmo, our Valentines’ Day PUP!

As part of the Valentines’ Day holiday, we’ll be blogging about 1 dog each day until the big day!

Cosmo is a tiny bundle of energy. But, he is a real lap dog for sure! He is a little shy with new people at first, but warms up quickly after a proper introduction and is your best friend. He loves to run and play and jump and give kisses. He plays very nicely with other submissive dogs, but is fearful of more dominant dogs. He enjoys playing with squeaky toys and fetching the ball. He loves to go for walks and does great riding in the car. He is working on crate trained and house trained if kept on a schedule. Cosmo is vocal when he hears other dogs barking or sees other dogs or people out walking. He is learning how to be more quiet and is very good when told ‘no’. He needs training, but also seems very eager to please his people and quick to learn new things. He is very lovable with his people and would do well in an active household. He is a real sweet cuddly boy that wants to be with and please his people, and he will make a wonderful companion!

Cosmo is neutered and microchipped. He is current on his DHPP, Rabies, and bordetella. He tested negative for heartworm and has been wormed and flea treated. Cosmo comes from an overcrowded shelter in California. PUP was asked to help and we are so glad we did. All dogs PUP pulls from California come with health certificates, as required by Washington State.

  • Male Miniature Poodle mix
  • Approximately 1 year old
  • Approximately 6.6 lbs
  • House trained if kept on a schedule
  • Crate trained
  • Will require a home with a fenced yard
  • Okay with other dogs, don’t know about cats
  • Dog respectful children 8 and older
  • Adoption fee: $285

If you think you have room in your home and heart for this dog and you reside within Washington State, please go to our Adoption Information page. There you will find more information and be able to fill out an adoption application. See his Petfinder profile here http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/21760137.

Note: The above description reflects the behavior we have observed in the dog’s foster home. Although PUP provides adopters up to the minute information on our dogs, we cannot guarantee they will behave in the same manner in a different environment with new owners.

I talk to him when I’m lonesome like; and I’m sure he understands. When he looks at me so attentively, and gently licks my hands; then he rubs his nose on my tailored clothes, but I never say naught thereat. New Transport from California brings licks of hope!

The following PUP dogs are coming on April 30th!

They are in need of foster homes and/or adoptive homes. They are all spayed or neutered, dental if needed, microchipped, flea treated, heartworm tested (negative) and wormed. They all come from high-kill shelters in California so come with the required health exam and health certificate. They have also been quarantined. More information will be available on Petfinder once they arrive here.

PUP was asked to help and we couldn’t say no to these guys or the shelter staff working hard to save them. The sooner we find homes for these furkids, the sooner we can save more. PUP works hard to help shelters in Washington and California. If you can help us help them, please complete a foster application (PUP provides everything for the foster dog) or adoption application. One dog’s ‘tail’ about narrowly escaping death row

I don’t know the story of how Dewey found himself at a high kill shelter in California, and I doubt he’ll ever tell me. Today he sits on the deck outside in the sun while I write this, but earlier this year he was scheduled to be destroyed. It made me ill to see his death date written out like a tombstone: September 7, 2010. He was not a bag of veggies spoiling in the refrigerator, or a dog that’s lived a long happy life and is being humanely euthanized because of an illness. He is a poodle mix, just shy of being a puppy! After I saw Dewey’s adorable photo and learned he was already scheduled to die, I wasn’t sure who I was mad at; his previous owner, the shelter or the pet overpopulation problem.

There are thousands of dogs destroyed every day because of irresponsible owners. I grew up with poodles and it really hit home to see Dewey contemplating his last meal. Why did he end up there? Surely he slipped away from a loving owner before they could microchip him? I couldn’t imagine someone purposefully releasing him to face a bleak 50% chance of survival.

But shelters destroy because there are too many pets and not enough owners. It’s an exponential issue, and only gets better by educating the public on responsible pet ownership. It might be cute to knock up your dog and have adorable puppies running around and the extra cash in your pocket from selling them. But would you think twice if you knew one of these dogs might end up destroyed in a shelter because their owner didn’t take the time to understand the breed’s behavior, or lifestyle?

For these reasons above I am glad I rescued Dewey. Although he’s just one dog saved, he is my dog saved and has radically changed my view on the importance of spay and neuter programs and adopting from a shelter. Seeing his body wiggling in anticipation of a belly rub reminds me I could never ask a breeder to bring another dog into the world when there are thousands of loving dogs sitting alone and defeated on death row.

Dewey has taught me a lot about what it means to be a dog owner. It is so true that dogs are very unique creatures with abundant personalities, and Dewey has a very special personality. This is why I am glad I rescued him from PUP Dog Rescue in Issaquah WA. Just a few days before he was scheduled to be destroyed, PUP was able to bring him to Seattle on a transport with a bunch of other lucky dogs and give him a second chance at life. I was then able to meet him and adopt him. To this day I still receive tremendous support from PUP on training, healthcare and more. Now I know the true “story of Dewey” started when he joined my family.
