How do I find a dog trainer?

We are often asked to recommend a dog trainer. I usually respond with, what kind of trainer would you like to work with? A good dog trainer will train you on how to work with your dog, whether a board-and-train situation, group situation, or individual lessons.

From our point of view, PUP needs the following in a trainer and so might you:

  1. Quick results. The longer our foster homes are filled, the more shelter dogs die. We also don’t have the money to work with a trainer that uses methods that prolong results. So timely results are important to us.
  2. Good energy, humane methods, knowledge, and proper instruction using the right tools. Some of our dogs have been neglected or abused—a good trainer is important to us.
  3. Able and willing to work with dogs that have aggressive tendencies. We might pull a dog that has an aggressive tendency and needs rehabilitation before placement. Trainers we use must be effective and efficient in working with behavior modification techniques.

Observe Your Dog First:

We start by listing what we are observing with the dog and then determining if we are in need of obedience only or some behavior modification. Are we looking for obedience training such as sit, down, wait, and a formal recall? Or, are the needs of the dog much more intense, such as lunging at other dogs while on a walk, attacking bicycles that pass by, or snapping at people? Obedience and behavior modification are two very different training applications, although obedience can play a vital role in rehabilitation of a dog.

Michael teaching Nalla “climb”.We at PUP are very blessed to have three highly skilled volunteer trainers, each very well versed in obedience, as well as rehabilitation. Michael Breton, Angie Burlingame, and Sean McDaniel have proven to be ideal trainers for PUP.

If you are looking for a well-qualified trainer to work with your dog, interview trainers just as you would interview someone taking care of your child. Watch the trainer as they work with numerous dogs. A trainer can ruin a dog and your bank account if they don’t know what they are doing. Look for what we refer to as a balanced trainer.

A Balanced Trainer:

  1. They have a calm energy with you and your dog.
  2. They will have a solid knowledge and understanding about the tools and techniques they use.
  3. They will correctly determine when and why your dog is stressed, anxious, and nervous, among other emotions.
  4. They will be patient with your dog, allowing him to make the decision to do what is being asked.
  5. They will give timely feedback to your dog such as a reward for doing something right, which could be a treat, toy, or “good boy,” and a consequence for unwanted behavior that is as simple as a “no,” “eh-eh,” or a correction.
  6. They will use the proper tools necessary to get positive results without doing harm.
  7. They will be honest about what they can accomplish and cannot accomplish in a given timeframe.

Adoption Story, Our Pet Adoption Experience with PUP Dog Rescue

waffles1I wanted to take a few minutes to write down my experience finding a rescue. The last time I worked this hard to get something was either a job or a house. I had to do less paperwork to bring my babies home from the hospital.  But I couldn’t recommend the process highly enough. The outcome has been finding the most amazing dog we’ve ever known. Add to that, NOT supporting breeders made it all the sweeter (recall some 4 million dogs are put down every year in the United States).

First of all, I had no idea what a great ‘deal’ rescue is. I got an INCREDIBLE puppy, which was:

  1. Still a baby at 3 months old
  2. The exact breed we were looking for (German Shepherd / Pit Bull mix)
  3. Already crate-trained
  4. Already house-trained
  5. Already neutered
  6. Already socialized
  7. Already had first round of shots and vet visit
  8. Already microchipped

….FOR ONLY $325!!!! Which also included:

  1. Another vet visit
  2. Pet Insurance
  3. A pet tag
  4. Free training for life through PUP Dog Rescue event

Ok so just for comparison purposes? You can elect to pay up to $600 for one of these puppies through a breeder. A puppy that has had no special attention and probably comes from a filthy puppy mill.

We began our search through Pet Finder – I knew from past experience rescuing that there were some great web resources to browse available dogs, but I had NO idea that I could find a PUPPY so easily, of every breed under the sun! I found puppies from all over the United States from organizations that would work with me to deliver the dog for the price of the adoption (usually around $400-$500 total!). The Android app made it all the easier, and before you know it my husband and I were putting puppies on our favorites list well into the night.

I ended up applying for about 6 or 7 dogs, and this was the hardest part. The applications are not simple, and honestly I got pretty tired of it. My advice for this part of the process, first find out if the dog is still available and let them know you are serious, maybe send them a brief bio and some pictures of your family. And be patient, as it may take a few days for them to get back to you. Also, don’t get your heart set on ONE dog, make sure you look into at least a half dozen, to improve your chances.

We found “Waffles” the first day. We fell instantly in love.

I filled out the app and sent it in to the adoption agency, PUP Dog Rescue, but I didn’t stop doggie browsing because I knew he was probably a popular puppy. I was told there was a lot of interest for him, and since I had two small children and didn’t own my home, I was pretty sure I wouldn’t qualify.

I was very pleased that the rescue org still worked with me to gain the ‘clearance’ needed to move to the next step, an interview with the rescue org director. Laura called me and we had a chat. She was impressed with my background raising large breed dogs, and felt I probably had what it would take to be a good mother to this strong individual. She promised I could at least meet him before she made her decision. There was a LOT of interest for this dog and she wanted to be sure she found him the right fit.

waffles2We met at the park on a beautiful March Sunday afternoon during one of their training events. We got to meet this little darling and work with him for the first time. He was a dream on a leash, not what we expected from a 3 month old puppy.

At one point my daughter grabbed the leash and started walking him across the park by herself. They became fast friends. Everyone in the family fell in love with him. Laura let us take him home that day. It was a great surprise, since we were supposed to have to do 2 trainings with him to qualify for the adoption.

It was a 3-week-long process from start to finish. I cannot describe, however, how rewarding the outcome has been. This dog is heaven sent.

waffles3He has been with us now for two months. He has NEVER had an accident in the house, never chewed up one of my favorite shoes. He was so well cared for in his infancy that training him has been easy as pie, and integrating into our family even easier.

We are so grateful to PUP Dog Rescue and his amazing foster family, who took such great care of him and made sure he found his forever home!

Five Tiny Additions to PUP!

My name is Patty and I am a volunteer for PUP. I help with event planning and the monthly PUPDate. My husband and I have pretty hectic schedules and only occasionally foster dogs. That’s one of the things I love about PUP—there are plenty of things to do and each of us takes on roles according to our availability and comfort level.

In February, my husband and I had a stretch of time with no upcoming commitments, so we decided to foster a dog. It was February 4 and I picked the dog at the bottom of the list, a Dachshund/Min Pin mix. At 17 pounds, Laura said she would probably be a good hiker for us. We were so convinced this foster would be adopted right away, we named her Valentine in honor of the holiday just 10 short days away.

Valentine came home with us on February 7 and we immediately knew she was a sweetheart. She was very gentle and, as we soon learned, also very pregnant! Whoa!!! Unexpected detour for sure! I was shocked and told Laura that if she had to pick a single volunteer more ill equipped to handle this situation, it would be me. Not having children of my own, I was clueless. I mean, really clueless. But, I had many people within PUP to consult with. We had made a commitment to Valentine and although we initially waivered, we watched Valentine’s five puppies come into this world on February 24. We named them Java, Pinky, Stamper, Dipper, and Claire.

The puppies are now about four weeks old, and in that time we’ve watched their eyes open, their reactions to hearing sound for the first time, their first steps, and of this writing, their baby teeth coming in. Their personalities are beginning to emerge and they love to play with each other. They will soon find their forever homes and this house, with eight dogs at the moment, will be down to two. That will be a bittersweet day, but I would not change this experience for anything.

Laura often says that we don’t always get the dog we want, but we get the dog we need. Thank you, Valentine, for giving me this gift and letting me share in your experience. It’s one I’ll never forget.

Duvall’s own little paradise for pooches!

So proud that Cecilia is one of our volunteers! Great article!

Faces of Duvall

Faces of Duvall A Day in the Life of Doggies HeavenI met Cecilia while looking around for a sitter for Tumble just a day before I launched this project. It was serendipitous, I suppose, that she was also the first to respond to the Call to Action I issued on Facebook. Funnily enough, the day on which we chose to do this was also National Puppies Day!

Cecilia is French, and hails from a small town in Southern France. She came to the States at 18 on a student exchange program to learn English, and fell in love with Washington. Fast forward 20+ years, Cecilia now runs her own dog boarding and sitting business, Doggies Heaven, tucked away in a corner of our very own slice of paradise.

Cecilia has always loved animals, having grown up with pets, and nurtured that love when she started working in pet care years ago. It was through this job that the opportunity to…
